Regina Reviews: Fortuna Ristorante: Buona fortuna? No, mediocre.


Fortuna Ristorante has been open for over a year, and has since established itself as a mid-range Italian restaurant in Regina's east end. Located on Quance, the old world eatery is open Monday to Saturday 11:30 am - close and Sundays from 5 pm - close. 

I ventured to Fortuna for a work party. Due to mixed reviews I'd been holding off visiting this addition to Regina's food scene. Additionally, over the past year I've been scaling back on my dining out. I've been disappointed this year by most of my meals out. Whether it was poor service or amazingly overcooked fish, I've just been down in the goshdarned dining out dumps. It's not cheap to eat out, and to spend money for a lame meal and/or disappointing service is frustrating and makes you feel like a dolt.

With that unnecessary prelude, I come to our meal at Fortuna.

Seasalt Pretzel Pops with Sriracha BBQ Queso

Awwww yeahhhh.


Who doesn't love them some GD pretzels. Ballpark pretzels are near and dear to my heart. Indeed it was pretzels that first got me to like mustard. I know - who doesn't like mustard? Well I didn't until I was probaaaably, ohhh 22. But hand me a warm pretzel and a few packages of mustard and I am a happy happy girl. One of my longstanding issues with Regina is that at the baseball team doesn't sell pretzels at their games. Poutine? Yup. Taco in a bag? Yup. Jalapeno cheese hotdogs? Sure! But pretzels are a bridge too far for the Red Sox apparently. 

So recently I've been sitting here in Sask just pining for pretzels.

But bah - who has the time to make their own??

Triple Pepper, Brie and Honey Mustard Grilled Cheese

Look into the cheese.... deep into the cheeeeeeese. 

Right now it's the start of summer in Regina, but I can't seem to get into the summer groove despite it being MID-JUNE. Maybe it's the weather or the lack of time out doors, but I can't kick my eating habits out of mid-winter. Losing my wisdom teeth and living on liquids for a week probably hasn't helped things either.

Since I've been stuck not eating for what feels like forever, but really has only been a handful (and handful and a half) of days. To combat my increasingly surliness/hunger pangs I've taken to posting my favourite foods for toothier people than myself to enjoy.

Jalapeño Popper Bacon-Wrapped Spring-Rolls



Everything is better in spring roll form. 
So remember when I said all I wanted to eat was jalapeno-popper based foods? This has not changed in any noticeable way. 

Long-time readers (Hi Dad!) may remember that this blog was originally entitled Fry Baby Fry and was supposed to be about my (mis)adventures in deep frying foods. Then I got chubbly after moving to Sask and decided that deep frying meals was probably not a good lifestyle choice as my metabolism was not content to stay as it had been for the first 25 years of my life. Middle age. Bummer.

Lean, Green, Spicy Chickpea Cuisine: Roasted Jalapeño Hummus

If Wes Anderson made hummus, I'm pretty sure it would look and taste something like this.

So I am obviously on a bit of a jalapeño kick at the moment.

It's this strange spring-ish/not quite spring weather we're having. I want all the juicy, fruity, fresh and tropical flavours of summer, but it's still, oh, 10 degrees. IT'S ALMOST JUNE - COME ON. I know some people have it worse. I keep reading about SNOW in Colorado. But I guess they have mountains and thus can ski and board down them? I just have a garden that can't quite grow. 

So anyway - it's not quite spring, but it's not winter either. I want summery flavours, but I also want comfort food. Apparently, my life solution has been to put jalapenos in it. Sort of like putting a bird on it, but much more edible.
